The
SF Bay Area consists of a nine country region home
to more than six and a half million people. Each day more than
300,000 vehicles drive into or out of San Francisco. As
described elsewhere on this site, the traffic here is often a
nightmare - affecting not only commuters but commercial
transport of all kinds.
East Bay Transport offers both commuters and
local companies same-day dock-to-dock delivery of key
personnel, critical documents or electronic media in less than
20 minutes throughout most of Bay Area. Although we have not
taken any polls or made formal market studies, it is likely
that several hundred passengers per day would consider our
services if reasonably priced. This is only a small fraction
of 1 percent of those who travel to or from San Francisco
daily.
In addition to local service right in the Bay
Area, an opportunity exists for delivery of light parcels and
passengers from San Francisco to Sacramento - a
distance of about 90 miles. Non-stop service using the
airlines will set you back about $275 for a non-stop 40
minute flight - not counting the time it takes you to get to
SF International (a dozen miles south of SF), then into downtown from Sacramento's airport
(about 10 miles northwest of the Capitol). Add some time to park
(or turn in your rental car) and then some more time to go
through security. What if instead you could board a craft right from Pier 39 or the Ferry
Building in SF. Then in about an hour, after a
comfortable low-level non-stop flight, you land right on the
river in downtown Sacramento. Fares will range from $20 in the
general Bay Area up to
$125 one way to Sacramento. Currently there is nothing else
in service
which can provide this kind of transport in this time frame at
our price point. The airlines can't do it. The various Bay Area catamaran ferries can't
do it either ... not at their cruising speed 30 to 35 knots.

Sample Routes in 2 Metro Areas
As FEDEX and UPS have discovered, the
real money is in transporting high-priority lightweight
parcels that need to be sent somewhere in a hurry.
Our light parcel service (same-day dock-to-dock from SF
to anywhere in the Bay Area (as defined in our offering -
including Vallejo, Antioch, and Sacramento) will carry any
documents or media for $20 per pound - with $6 charged for the
first ounce.. Competition? not much. You can send almost
anything for delivery on the NEXT DAY for $15 to $25, but same
day? Only courier services, private messenger, or some
airlines offer that .... and only for major cost.

Calculate next-day air shipping rates by
UPS
100 one-pound parcels flown from Sacramento
to SF would generate $2,000 in sales - PER TRIP.
East Bay Transport will partner with local
private post offices (e.g.: Mailboxes etc, The UPS Store) to
handle pick-up and delivery from their (selected) branches to
our dockside terminals. Customers can bring their items to the
private postal branch near our office, or bring them directly
to our passenger-lounge terminals. We will pay the land based
postal branch $2 to pick-up and deliver each parcel. In other
words, they receive $1 each time they collect or deliver a
package.
We can carry a 1 oz
parcel and send it anywhere around the Bay in an
hour for just six dollars. A
ten-page document, a thumb-drive, or a CD will ship in this
category. Here are a few samples of what we can ship for that
price:
Many documents and files are now stored on
electronic media: CD's, DVD's, thumb drives, memory sticks,
etc. Here is a proposed promotional offer for new customers.
We will give them a free 512 MB thumb drive, 2 mini-CD's, and
a coupon for delivery of their first one-ounce parcel This is
an ideal method to send artwork, digital photos, DVD's and so
on to printer, marketers, your sales staff, a management team,
etc. Mini-CD's hold up to 210 MB and are suitable for
PowerPoint presentations, MS Word, and other MS Office
documents, MP3 files, and so on.
After paying the private post office we will
earn $4 on each small parcel, or
$6,400 for each 100 pounds carried
in our craft. Several hundred pounds of cargo daily, at this
rate, could make for a very profitable operation. This can be
accomplished by small and medium-scaled craft (from 4 to 12
passengers - or up to 1,000 to 3,000 lb in payload). East Bay
Transport realizes that in the days of broadband access, more
and more documents are simply shared or posted online. Still,
for legal, sentimental or security reasons there will always
be the need to send original documents or certain items (like
original CD's, encrypted thumb drives, car keys, for
instance).
The SF Bay Area includes San Jose, East Palo
Alto, SFO, Oakland, Berkeley as well as Larkspur, San Rafael
and Vallejo. This is a
world-class seaport with 2.3 million
containers shipped through Oakland per year. East Bay Transport's
surface-effect craft can link most of the Bay Area
with priority dock-to-dock service in less than 30 minutes - with
some routes in less than 15 minutes.

Marina del Rey offers ideal proximity to Newport Beach, Dana
Point, Malibu, and Santa Barbara.
This is one of the most
spectacular harbors in southern California
- located just below Santa Monica and due north of Los
Angeles International Airport (LAX). Cruising at 80 mph above the waves,
a number of marinas and seaports will be within 2 hours
flight time from Marina del Rey, with selected routes under
20 minutes.

These are a few routes planned for the
Bay Area and Los Angeles & San Diego. The real 'sweet spot'
in terms of distance lies between 25 and 150 miles. Airlines
seldom serve routes under 150 miles - it is not cost effective
or practical. Water taxis or ferries primarily operate distances of
60 miles or less - as passengers are not inclined to spend more
than
two hours commuting by water. Our longer flights will
include stops to pick up and drop off passengers and packages.
Other
metropolitan markets include: Seattle, Miami, San Diego, Newport
Beach, Boston, New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.
Partnered with a local private postal service, East Bay
Transport can offer same-day dock-to-dock delivery service unmatched in the
current economy.
Customers will be able to go online or visit
any of our offices and enter their shipping information at our
website. This will allow them to reserve space on a specific
flight and to print out a label. Each of our office will
provide small (6 x 9 in) and large (10 x 13) padded envelopes
for one ounce and one pound service. This will enable us to
build a customer database quickly. This arrangement allows
the customer to enter the shipping information directly
at his / her convenience, reduce errors and save time. Here is
a sample label....

In this example, the top row contains the
sending office, date & time stamp, and a two letter
abbreviation of the destination terminal - in this example,
San Francisco.. The bottom row contains a bar-code, date &
time stamp when the parcel was delivered and the abbreviation
of the destination terminal that received / handled the
package. We include on each label the physical location,
phone, and email of both sender and recipient to follow-up (a)
in case package is not picked-up by the customer and (b) to
develop a customer data base. Even though the parcel will not
be delivered to the street address, the private postal service
- or our staff - will be able to contact the recipient or
sender to ensure pick-up.
The video clips
below illustrate vehicles similar but not exactly the craft
developed by Jeff Dunan and East Bay Transport.

- Large scale model of
twin-rudder Wing In Surface Effect vehicle -

-
2 pass single-rudder Wing In Surface Effect vehicle -

-
6 pass twin-rudder Wing In Surface Effect vehicle -
Remember: a surface-effect vehicle is at
cruising altitude and speed within seconds after
take-off. There is no "climbing to altitude", no
pressurization, no long descents into an airfield, etc. - just
direct flight to the destination. These craft can fly over
bridges, ships, and sand bars, yet they primarily fly within
one-half wing-span of the water's surface.
In addition to civilian passenger service and
parcel delivery, these vehicles provide ideal marine patrol,
search & rescue, as well as aerial recon (photo, video,
elint) and various other military applications. This is almost
a stealth vehicle. Without a radar reflector or transponder it
will be difficult to plot on radar. While sitting or sailing
on the water it will produce a very reduced sound signature -
one difficult to trace or plot.
The pair of
horizontal-axis wind turbines offer almost unlimited range
at sea under selected conditions. When the turbines are
engaged at landing, the craft will be brought to an
immediate stop. It is even possible to reverse the craft
(i.e. sail backwards). These turbines also allow very
controlled approaches at steep angles of attack when
approaching any target from above - ideal for targeting.
Aside from the enormous price differential, a
key advantage of our vehicles over helicopters is that we can
easily land and operate on water.

US Navy P3 Orion on patrol in year 2000
These elements offer greater capability to
the USCG and US Navy for marine patrols, drug interdiction,
search & rescue, and other mission requirements in
littoral / coastal waters.
The scenarios
described on this page represent the future of high-speed
low-altitude transport - for goods, services, and
information. Our vehicles are also designed to run on LNG or
propane - with significantly less emissions than gasoline or
marine diesel.
With
the price of fuel and current traffic conditions,
surface-effect craft offer a safe viable and GREEN alternative.
